Helping identify people at risk of osteoarthritis after knee injury

Dr. Sarah Koles, a specialized musculoskeletal radiologist with Mayfair Diagnostics, is part of a team of biomedical engineering researchers at the McCaig Institute for Bone and Joint Health looking at developing a mechanical marker to identify those at high risk of developing osteoarthritis following knee injury. After an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, changes to knee motion and joint biology can disrupt the structural integrity of cartilage, reducing its load bearing capacity and leading to cartilage loss – which may eventually lead to osteoarthritis. This team is investigating ways to diagnose these early changes to the cartilage and therefore prevent further damage to the joint.
