YUKON’S RUN FOR MOM HELPING TO FIGHT BREAST CANCER

Mayfair Diagnostics is pleased to support the 23rd annual Run for Mom on Sunday, May 9, 2021. Beginning at 11 a.m. in Rotary Park, Whitehorse, Yukon, participants are encouraged to run, walk, cheer, volunteer, and donate to support local breast health care.

Mayfair Diagnostics has been a long-time supporter of the Run for Mom, which has been raising money since 1997 to help provide the best breast health for Yukoners by purchasing advanced medical equipment and raising awareness of the importance of breast health.

Thanks to the efforts of past runs a digital mammography machine was purchased in 2009. This machine helped make mammograms more comfortable by putting less pressure on the breast and improved safety by using less radiation. Shortly after the unit was operational, the number of women receiving mammograms each day nearly doubled.

Most recently, the run made a significant contribution toward the purchase of a breast tomosynthesis mammography system at Whitehorse General Hospital. Installed in 2020, this technology allows for 3D imaging of breast tissue, greatly enhancing the level of detail for a clearer view of breast tissue with a very small dose of radiation. It’s the best way to detect breast cancer in its early, most treatable stage because it provides a detailed look at the internal structure of breast tissue and can reveal changes that are too small to feel.

Breast cancer screening saves lives. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, the death rate from breast cancer has been declining since the 1980s. This is thanks to earlier detection from regular mammogram screening and improvements in breast cancer treatment.

Breast cancer will affect one in eight women in Canada, but if you find it early, there are more ways to treat it and the chances are better you will survive it. The best way to detect breast cancer early is by having regular screening mammograms. Having a mammogram every year, or every two years (based on your risk factors), makes it easier for a radiologist to compare your images and see changes or areas of concern. If you wait until you feel pain or notice something different about your breasts, the breast cancer might be bigger and harder to fight.

Mayfair Diagnostics has been the sole medical imaging provider to the Yukon Hospital Corporation since 2013, performing nearly 27,000 diagnostic and interventional procedures per year on average. Mayfair radiologists perform regular onsite visits to the Whitehorse General Hospital combined with teleradiology services.

Mayfair Diagnostics was the first, and remains one of the only, Canadian practices to provide 24/7/365 staff radiologist coverage for hospital and teleradiology sites.

Since 2007, Mayfair radiologists have been providing teleradiology services for health regions and imaging departments in both urban and rural settings. With real-time reporting, our services have saved regional resources, decreased emergency room wait times, improved patient care, and saved unnecessary travel.

Teleradiology is the transmission of radiological images, such as X-rays, CTs, and MRIs, from one location to another for the purposes of sharing studies with other radiologists and physicians. As the largest provider of teleradiology in western Canada, we have established a robust, industry-leading solution that provides 24/7 reporting to more than 12 sites in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories.

We have an experienced and highly skilled practice which blends sub-specialty training and broad-based skills to provide imaging solutions across the entire spectrum of medical diagnoses. We are able to consult internally on particularly challenging or complex cases, or act as generalists while on call.
