​​​​​​​WARNING: POSSIBLE PHONE SCAMMERS POSING AS MAYFAIR DIAGNOSTICS

Mayfair Diagnostics would like to warn the public about a possible telephone scam. We have been advised that members of the public have been contacted by callers posing as representatives of Mayfair Diagnostics. This is a case of caller identification “spoofing” in which manipulation of the caller ID feature allows the scammer to disguise their true identity and make the caller ID appear to be that of Mayfair Diagnostics. Please be assured that Mayfair’s patient information records have NOT been compromised.

TIPS FOR RECOGNIZING A LEGITIMATE CALL FROM MAYFAIR DIAGNOSTICS

Since Mayfair Diagnostics does call patients and will confirm patient information over the phone in order to book a medical imaging appointment, we offer the following tips for recognizing legitimate calls:

• Caller ID should display “Mayfair Diag” and phone number 1 (866) 611-2665. We are open Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• When Mayfair Diagnostics booking coordinators call to book a medical imaging exam we will, first of all, confirm with you the name of your referring doctor who ordered the exam. Please hang up if the caller:
  • Asks for your patient information without first confirming your referring doctor with you.
  • Is unable to give the name of your referring doctor when asked.
  • Gives an incorrect name for your referring doctor.
• Mayfair Diagnostics booking coordinators will need to confirm some of your personal details, but we will NOT ask for any financial information. Please note that any personal details will be taken after we have confirmed your referring doctor with you.
• If you have any doubts about the legitimacy of a phone call, please hang up and dial our toll free number (1-866-611-2665). Our booking agents can then help you book your appointment, or answer your questions.

OTHER TIPS FOR DEALING WITH POSSIBLE FRAUDULENT PHONE CALLS

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission offers advice on how to protect yourself from scammers, as well as examples of possible scams. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission also offers the following tips:

• You may not be able to tell right away if an incoming call is spoofed. Be careful about responding to ANY request for personal identifying information.
• Never give out personal information such as account numbers, SIN numbers, mother’s maiden names, passwords, or other identifying information in response to unexpected calls or if you are at all suspicious.
• If you get an inquiry from someone who says they represent a company or a government agency seeking personal information, hang up and call the phone number on your account statement, in the phone book or on the company’s or government agency’s website to verify the authenticity of the request.
• Use caution if you are being pressured for information immediately.

If you believe you have received a fraudulent phone call, please report it. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre collects information on fraud and identity theft. They also provide information on past and current scams affecting Canadians, so the more information they receive about these kinds of calls the better.
